Stressful living and polluted air use up large quantities of the vitamins in our bodies. This is why it’s so important for people that live and work in pressure-cooker environments to eat very, very well! Unfortunately, the more pressure people are under, the more junk they usually eat.
The nasty by-product of a metabolism under pressure? “Free” radicals!
Millions and millions of free radicals are produced by a body that isn’t coping well with the pressures of life - eating lousy food, being inactive, worrying too much, smoking, drinking a lot of booze, not sleeping well, being very intense, being aggressive and unfriendly, etc. Even exercising to excess can produce extra free radicals in your body!
Too many free radicals in your body results in your immune system becoming stuffed up; making you more prone to colds, flu and illnesses, in general. It’s also thought to be responsible for acceleration of the aging process, heart disease, inflammation of the joints (arthritis), many cancers and post exercise muscle soreness. Basically, large numbers of free radicals have the potential to wreak havoc in the body.
How do you disarm free radicals?
Antioxidants scavenge free radicals from the body cells, and prevent or reduce the damage caused by oxidation. Plant foods are rich sources of antioxidants. They are most abundant in fruits and vegetables, as well as other foods including nuts, wholegrains and some meats, poultry and fish.
